QB Trey Lance, DAL (3 Viewers)

Ballsy move by SF to move on so quickly. Kudos for not chase spilled milk
The drama isn't good for SF. This was in the cards once they demoted Lance to QB3. No way they keep Lance and this circus around Purdy.

Purdy's got all the pressure on him now (same for Shanny and Lynch). They better hope he continues to shine, or it will get ugly.

How many 4th round picks have the possible upside?

Maybe he comes in for four games and looks great, and they trade him. Great move by Dallas.

What has Lance shown since he's come into the NFL that would indicate that he could play 4 games and be good. Has he had 4 good games in a season ever? You probably have to go back to to high school.
I can’t believe the niners got a fourth round pick for an unproven and QB that has not shown much of anything after a couple of years. Not sure what Dallas is doing. It’s going to take more than 4 good games for Lance to have trade value.

It was in the cards way before that. Most Niner fans knew this was coming.

There is definitely pressure on Purdy, but he doesn't let pressure bother him, I think he will embrace the challenge/pressure and play at a high level.

People are so polarized when it comes to their opinion of this kid. Either you're a Shanahan/Lynch truther and refuse to believe this is one of the worst "let's move up in the draft" trades of all time. Or you feel bad for him because he hasn't gotten a shot.

As a Cowboys fan, this is a head-scratcher. I don't see Trey Lance taking over this year. I just don't. Anyone here saying Cooper Rush was serviceable didn't watch the games. Someone said they won, inspite of him and that is the truth. He had some decent plays but doesn't have arm talent, no escapability and had a pocket I'd feel comfortable putting a new born baby in. The defense played lights out. It wasn't the Cooper Rush show. Moving on.

However, I'm not entirely sure Lance doesn't get reps with the scout team and I'm guessing he will get quite a bit of preseason work. I don't think it is out of the realm for Lance to become a Josh Allen. I don't believe he will be used in gadget plays - he really isn't Taysom Hill. The jury is still out on the guy. He has 3 games under his belt and one-of-which was a monsoon in Chicago... so, entirely possible he has talent. San Francisco couldn't have Purdy looking over his shoulder at thus guy with the draft capital they gave to sign Lance and had to part ways. Multiple NFL teams were interested I heard... Dallas taking him for a dart throw 4th round pick? I'll have it.

I can already tell you, saying Cooper Rush is better than Lance. Pass me the bong, I'll take a rip to get on your level. Counting the guy out after 3 games... too soon to tell. He is 23 years old and widely considered a 1st round project, San Fran just ran out of time and found a new project. Dallas is actually a perfect landing spot. It is great for a Rookie to sit behind a vet. He has no pressure. Minimal draft capital spent on him. Learn the playbook and challenge the starter. I like Dak but Lance's talent could be greater than Dak's and that is why the trade was made.

Yeah, like maybe 9 and they anoint him the starter and trade away the guy they gave a king's ransom to get? 9 games is how many games Brock Purdy played. Mr. Irrelevant.

You can get rich off one game played... see: Flynn, Matt (Detroit Lions v. Green Bay - nothing on the line).

If he comes out for 4 games and balls out like the #3 overall pick, you don't think he has trade value beyond a 4th round pick? Lol. @massraider isn't saying, if he wins 4 games he has value... you've invested minimal capital to this guy. If he comes out and has any semblance of talent relative to the First Round Grade he had been given... you don't have to worry about his value because he's probably staying and you're looking at Dak Prescott's trade value. However, value can be built in a 4 game stretch and discrediting that doesn't make sense.

Yeah, because he proved that stepping in and playing as the 262nd pick. What incredible moxie he has to step in where nobody thought he'd be worth a **** and play. This is pressure. You're the guy now. We just sent Lance and all the investment we made toward him away. Go win us a Super Bowl. Not sure he's ever been faced with that type of pressure but hey.. you got Sam Darnold.

From my viewings of him this preseason, he looked totally lost in an offense he's been in for years. Making some very bad reads. Now moving to a new offense, yeah, going to say zero chance he "balls out". Dallas is going to be fighting for the NFC East, if Prescott goes down, Lance most likely isn't going to be the guy that gets the call to fill in.

Dallas has been pretty good drafting in the 4th round. Tony Pollard, Dak Prescott, Tyler Biadasz, Jabril Cox, Jake Ferguson. 5 starters this year from round 4. That's a pretty good track record and I hate Dallas.

I think we are saying he's been in an offense for years. Trey Lance has been in the 49er offense like I've been in porn. Mostly on the outside looking in.

You have 2 years to work with the guy.

I will say this has a lot of makings of Jerry finding a shiny toy that may never see the field but I take the chance on hitting the lottery with this kid. In a sparky comment I would say, go ahead and add Trey Lance to that list of dudes Dallas hit on with 4th round picks but we don't know... giving this guy the death sentence for his career seems a little premature.

Anyone saying Trey has looked lost hasn't watched. He's a slow starter and gets better as he plays.

Against the Raiders, he started 2-4, then completed 8 of his final 11 throws.

Against the Broncos, he started 4-9, then completed 8 of his final 9 throws.

Next practice, he started 0-4, then completed his final 4 throws.

No agenda, just posting facts. I like Trey. Im kinda bummed he went to a garbage organization, but they paid for him fair and square.

Good post. Like many have mentioned, he (probably more than any other young highly drafted quarterback I can think of) needEd experience in order to see if he can develop. Hopefully he gets a chance at redemption some day.

I was saying this when you made your he won't be a QB2 comment. QB2 is a wasteland. You could do a lot worse than Lance. You can throw Lance in the trash in a year or two if he doesn't develop.
Who says he's the QB2 in Dallas ATM? They have a guy who is 5-1 as the starter.
5-1! Rush is better than Dak!
You can be snarky about it but the Niners, who invested 3 first round picks in Lance thought Brock Purdy & Sam Darnold were better than him.

Don't forget the fact that the Niners didn't want to pay even $900k for the rest of this year on a QB you allege is worthy of a starting role in the NFL, but they're happy to pay Darnold $4.5 mil.

The facts, the real facts not the alternative ones, tell the story. It's your choice whether or not you want to hear it.

No one, not even me (and I am nowhere near his biggest detractor) is closing the book on his career. He's young and has NFL caliber physical tools, we think. He still has a chance to do great things.

But, let's see where Lance lands on the Dallas depth chart before suggesting this move was anything more that a blind dart throw for the Cowboys.

I'm posting a lot in here and I don't stand in either camp.

He's currently a failed reach but the story of his NFL career isn't over.

I think there are plenty of people in here with a similar view.

Lance only had 99 passing attempts in high school and about 300 total in college. His entire career starting at Pop Warner he’s had fewer attempts than most starting NFL or college QBs have in one season. It’s extraordinary. Normally you’d absolutely expect multiple people to get fired for a mistake of this magnitude.

Sadly, just a really bad fit in sf. I'll always believe that if he'd been given a year to start and take his lumps, he would have figured it out.

Shanny's earned the right to be a stickler and insist on players reacting exactly how he wants them to react as the play unfolds. I think it was just a poor fit in terms of a kid that needed live reps and probably a less dickish coach (sorry joe) and never got on track. The doghouse is real and I don't think he ever really got out of it. I'm not saying he never got a chance or got a raw deal. But shanny's not a warm fuzzy development guy. I think a guy like Reid would have been a better fit for the type of coaching that Lance seems to have needed.

I forget the coach that had the line "how do you coach all of these different players" .. "I coach them all the same- differently" Each player needs something different to succeed. SF obviously finds players that excel in their system and with their coaching. Similar to how it used to be in NE. But it's not for everyone.

The change of scenery and all the lack of every-day facing of "failure to meet expectations" helps him chill and develop his skill. He seems like a good kid.

The thing i find most interesting about this trade (other than what this might mean for Dak down the road) is that Dallas is facing some tough cuts along the defensive line and backfield next week. They are going to be letting a good player go because of this trade. Hopefully they can ”rehabilitate” his stock to the point where he is a meaningful player for Dallas or they can get something better in return via another trade.

Man. When you lay it out this way, it’s even crazier that San Fran not only drafted him 3rd overall but traded that many assets to move up and get him.

Interesting. Assuming no minimum snaps because Lance has had a fraction of what the rest have had.

Maiocco:

Here are the no-context passer ratings of QBs selected in first round of the 2021 NFL Draft:

Mac Jones 89.0
Trey Lance 84.5
Trevor Lawrence 83.4
Justin Fields 79.7
Zach Wilson 70.9

@Chaka You and most people are overthinking this.

It's simple: Lance got hurt, and Purdy came in and stole the job. I stand by what I said about the politics of them wanting (needing) to move on from Lance for the sake of Purdy. They had to choose one or the other and had an easy choice once Purdy was healthy for W1. This trade and the demotion to QB3 was SF waving goodbye to the media circus. That's my opinion and where I'm putting a period on the Lance SF saga. It's a new age now. Purdy is SF's guy and Lance gets a fresh start in Dallas. I'll be rooting for both to succeed!

Lombardi with the voice of reason:

There are no bad guys in the 49ers - Trey Lance saga. SF tried to take huge swing for the future, even while they were contending. It was about rookie-deal QB sustainability, and the opportunity organically fell into Brock Purdy's lap instead. Football is chaotic like that.

To the 49ers' credit, they put themselves in the shockingly rare position of being able to survive what became, for all of their intents and purposes, a massive draft trade-up whiff.

Perhaps the 49ers were too brazenly optimistic about all that would've had to have gone right in their plan to integrate Lance, but the most valuable takeaway here is more zoomed out than that: A good overarching process and roster-building system can give a team leeway for those bigger rolls of the dice, since even a bad roll doesn't end up disastrous in the big picture.

Inevitably, all discussions of the matter circle back to Purdy. Without his emergence, it's hard to see any of this movement happening.

Will Grier is better than Lance on good days and awful on bad days. Lance seems very much like Grier II in Dallas.
Not a bad theory. A few teams are developing athletic QBs as backups...worth a shot

FTR, Darnold ain't better than Lance. This move was all about Purdy > Lance. Darnold was safe insurance for Purdy's injury. I 100% doubt Darnold would've started over Lance if Purdy was out the first part of the season. Sorry @Hot Sauce Guy
Can't say that
Can't say Levis is better than Willis
Can't say....preseason is over and battles were won. Kudos to the victors

Maybe so.

I'd take a ride on the Lance train over Darnold. We know what Darnold is. He's a backup QB at best. Usually, you take the upside guy who is younger and unknown and bet on the upside. QB2 guys like Darnold are a dime a dozen.

Sorry, you're wrong. Shanahan LOVES Darnold, and has since before he was even drafted. There was almost no chance Lance would have started over Darnold if Lance hadn't been traded.

With a SB roster, Shanahan is starting the guy with 50+ starts over the guy with 4 starts every time.

Every time.

I'm not arguing floor. Darnold has had years of starts in the league. Of course, his floor is higher than Lance's.

Yes. Easily. 100%

Because Darnold can run an NFL offense and Lance can’t. It’s why they brought in Darnold and it’s why Darnold the QB2

Completely agree, and it’s not a hard question to answer. Snap yes and not close.

All this reading between the lines “politics” talk is ridiculous. The 49ers couldn’t care less about politics when it comes to winning football games.

The bottom line is that Darnold is an NFL QB and Lance is a project,

Very fair and well considered response.

I think you are very much overstating the media impact. Lance isn't Tebow, he's a flavor of the month on the grand stage and doesn't break through the wall of NFL centric media to national media. But it's a consideration on some level.

I also think you are understating the fact Purdy was injured and Lance had every opportunity to show the coaches they should question any commitment to Purdy. Financially all of the commitment was to Lance.

But, you're right, it's done for Lance in SF. His story isn't over. Let's see where he ends up with Dallas.

It's not maybe.
We had debates and discussions and every opinion was valid.
Now though is results time
The results aren't at face value. There are politics at play.
No, there aren’t. That the 49ers would allegedly play politics over prioritizing winning football games is a wholly preposterous assertion IMO.
Unfortunately, politics plays a role in lots of situations and the best or most talented person isn’t always 1a.

man made more than 100k PER SNAP with the niners. 260 or so snaps in his career. 27M+ earnings.

sans doubt, the worst trade up in nfl history. shocking, SHOCKING move. execs should be hung to dry.

I think he was on the brink of being cut

When you can't look capable in practice that's a huge problem

I thought someone would take a chance and he will probably get recycled a couple of times because of the 'potential' but being a backup qb in dallas tells me his career is almost over at this point

Shanahan says Trey Lance was emotional upon getting the news of being the third-string QB. That's why the day off was given.

Lance took some time to think about it (becoming 3rd string QB) and came back asking for a chance to be QB2 elsewhere.

Sure, maybe. I don’t really trust anything a coach — especially one like Shanahan who is well versed at narrative spinning — says to the media.
