[Dynasty] 2022 NFL Draft Class (2 Viewers)

Former NC State RB Zonovan Knight is selling his special teams prowess to teams during the interview process.

Knight (5'11"/210) said after NC State's pro day that he tells teams during the interviews, "all of us [running backs] will run the ball, but what separates me is special teams." He went on to point out that running backs falling outside of the second and third rounds need to "have something else that brings value" and is hoping his special teams experience can be that value for one team. During his time at NC State, Knight returned 30 kickoffs for 933 yards and two scores, averaging 31.1 yards per return. Knight is likely to hear his name called at some point during the draft, but he's likely a Day 3 pick at best.

Texas Tech WR Erik Ezukanma ran a 4.55 at the Texas Tech Pro Day.

That's a solid time for Ezukanma's (6'2"/209) size. He caught 48 passes for 705 yards and four touchdowns, and also rushed for 138 yards and two scores in 2021 which is not bad at all, especially with Texas Tech's QB issues. It's a stacked WR class so guys like Ezukanma can fall through the cracks, but that just means someone could really get a nice steal in the later rounds.

Western Kentucky QB Bailey Zappe completed 55-of-56 throws in freezing conditions at the WKU Pro Day, drawing interest from many scouts.

Zappe (6'0.5"/215) is not one of the top QBs in the draft due to some physical limitations, but there's he's as accurate as anyone and was more productive than any D1 college QB before him. He put on a show at his Pro Day, which was described as "impressive" by many scouts, hitting 55-of-56 throws in cold and very windy conditions. Included were 13 deep balls, which shows Zappe's got accuracy to all parts of the field. Zappe is not likely to be drafted as a starter anywhere, but a high level backup with potential is definitely on the cards.

@Faustany chance of adding these guys to the first post index at the top of the thread? And I think I have asked this before and I forget the answer but can we pin this thread to the top of the SharkPool topics? Or even a link to this thread within the top of the other pinned thread entitled "Index to Offensive Player and Team threads - UPDATED for 2021"?

Done!

According to Rob Holmes of the College Heights Herald, Western Kentucky WR Jerreth Sterns ran a 40-yard dash in the 4.4 range at his pro day.

Sterns (5'9/195) was one of the Combine's biggest snubs after leading the nation in receiving last season with a line of 148-1891-17. Sterns saw 92.9% of his snaps come from the slot per PFF.com, and reportedly also showed well in the vertical jump at his pro day workout. Sterns had a chance to show his skills at the Shrine Bowl in February, and was dubbed a "winner" of the week by Shrine Bowl Director of Football Operations Eric Galko. Whether or not he hears his name called in the draft, Sterns will find himself on an NFL roster come training camp. A strong pro day and solid 2021 could get him into the Day 3 conversation.

Guy cannot be running 4.7s at safety and be number two overall on your draft board. It just...this testing isn't football, I get that, but it counts for something, right?

Maryland TE Chigoziem Okonkwo performed well against press coverage over his college career.

Okonkwo (6'2/244) is a player who was once under-the-radar who has seen his draft stock rise and has impressed in offseason events like the Shrine Bowl ahead of the 2022 NFL Draft. He found a good amount of success on the college gridiron, particularly exceptional against press coverage. According to Pro Football Focus, Okonkwo's 88.6 receiving grade against press coverage was the highest among college football tight ends last season.

Draftwire's Luke Easterling compares Virginia TE Jelani Woods to Antonio Gates.

There hasn't been much talk about a tight end going on Day 1 in the draft. Woods was considered a late Day 2 pick early in the predraft process, but with a great showing at the combine, we've seen his stock soar. He's getting some top 30 visits, which means some teams certainly want to see more of him and someone could take him on the first day. Easterling has the Titans grabbing the former Virginia tight end at No. 26, and on his write-up, he compliments his athleticism on such a massive frame and feels like he has the same physical attributes as the future hall of fame Antonio Gates.

Michigan EDGE Aidan Hutchinson drew rave reviews from coaches for his character and versatility, but also some questioned his tape and on-field product.

Hutchinson (6'6"/269) is the odds-on favorite to go first overall, so perhaps that's why Bruce Feldman of The Athletic chose less than glowing coaches reviews to put for him. Of the three quotes for him, two had something negative to say about Hutchinson, which was not the case for pretty much anyone else. They agreed that he's incredibly tough and his measurables are great, with excellent versatility and the ability to do everything you want from and EDGE and more. At the same time two of the coaches questioned why his film doesn't look great, and one implied they didn't have much trouble blocking him and said he isn't in the same ballpark as former OSU EDGE Chase Young who went second overall in 2020. Hutchinson will almost certainly go first come draft time, but it is interesting that coaches seem split on his college production.

Montana State LB Troy Andersen ran a 3.99 short shuttle and 6.72 three-cone at his Pro Day.

Andersen (6'3.5"/243) was already making waves as an athletic freak after running a 4.42 at the Combine, fastest of all LBs, but this puts him in the next stratosphere. If those numbers are taken as gospel, when fed into the RAS calculator along with the scores he had at the combine, Andersen has a perfect 10 RAS, making him THE most athletic LB in the last 35 years. That is ridiculously impressive. For more context, that shuttle would've been the second fastest time of ANY position at the combine, and three-cone would rank fifth. This dude can move, and his draft stock is hurtling upwards.

Oregon EDGE Kayvon Thibodeaux has elite first-step, but effort is questionable according to multiple coaches.

Thibodeaux (6'5"/250) has been falling in the draft since the season started. Once the obvious No. 1 pick, Bruce Feldman has Thibodeaux going eighth, and the coaches so far back up the public perception of Thibodeaux. He's got elite athleticism, with his first step in particular being once in a generation, but the effort and desire were questioned by four of five coaches quoted. One coach compared him to Josh Rosen, which really is not the Pro comparison you want, and another said "he was a non-factor in so many games." Hardly a ringing endorsement. People's level of motivation can change once they get to the NFL, usually for the worse but perhaps it will be what Thibodeaux needs to harness his incredible natural talent.

Notre Dame S Kyle Hamilton has range and size, but coverage and speed are questionable according to coaches.

Hamilton (6'4"/220) has had a very strange lead up to the draft. After the college football season, many considered Hamilton THE most talented prospect in the CFB, often mocking him in the top two, and no later than the top five which is incredible given the safety position isn't usually highly valued. Then his Combine numbers came out, and while his size and jumping were elite, his agility and speed left a lot to be desired. Considering how important those traits are for DBs, he started to fall, and things really got going when it was reported he ran in the 4.7s at his Pro Day, which is bafflingly slow for a DB. That has reversed course, with many analysts and draft experts saying the speed factor is overblown, as none of that deficiency showed on the tape. Now we have a few coaches testimonies that still don't put those concerns to bed. He's described as rangy which is great, and the body and length are tantalizing, but two of the three coaches said his coverage in space was not good enough specifically against the slot, and one coach said they didn't feel they had the need to go away from him. Compare that to what coaches said about Ahmad Gardner (“I thought he was very good but I didn’t know how good he was because nobody ever really went at him. We didn’t want to. We put a slapdick (receiver) over there the whole game and never looked at him," and "he completely shut down that side of the field.") and you can see the massive difference. They play different positions, and coverage isn't everything for a safety, but it seems disingenuous to completely disregard the 40 time like many are doing right now.

This is behind a paywall on The Athletic and I would not normally post links due to that but this was by far the most entertaining mock draft I've read all year if you can access it. (I'd recommend the site but if not try a trial membership)

Baylor RB Abram Smith has an elite burst per RAS, displayed by his 10-yard split.

A north and south style runner, Smith (5'11/217) doesn't have great speed, but he does have the burst to explode through the hole. His 10-yard split was timed at 1.53 in the 93.6 percentile of all running backs in the combine era (since 1987). With a player that runs like Smith, top speed is an added bonus, but the burst to explode through the hole will help maximize his effectiveness in the NFL. He could be a steal for a team on day three.
